Wedding History: The Garter Toss

Did you know that the garter toss dates back centuries? Here’s how it started: Anything worn by the bride was considered lucky. Members of the bridal party would follow the couple to the wedding night room (how cozy!), and in their fervor to get a piece of the bride’s clothing for luck, would tear at her dress. Over the years, brides got smart — they started throwing their garters to the mob.

Luckily for today’s brides, the bridal party no longer follows the couple to their wedding night chambers, and wedding guests are perfectly happy to take part in the bouquet and garter toss, leaving the bride’s dress intact. Including the garter toss in your reception? Find selected garters on sale this month at our sister site, Beach Theme Wedding Shop.
