From the
cloudless blue sky and the gentle late-summer breeze, you’d
have no idea Hurricane Isabel had stormed through Southern Maryland
just two days before. The uninvited storm did nothing to stop
the celebration of Summer Lockhart and Jesse Webb’s marriage.
Guests filed into St. Paul’s
United Methodist Church in Leonardtown to the sound of wind
chimes and flutes. Jovial groomsmen greeted and seated gusts
at the early evening ceremony. Baby’s breath and vine
decorated each pew in the church, and the center aisle was
lined with tulle. The forest theme would be echoed throughout
the day.
The bride arrived at the church
in a black stretch limo shortly before the ceremony began.
Bridesmaids and flower girls piled out of the limo before
the bride made her appearance. The bridesmaids’ dresses
were all different – some were sparkly, while others
had low or V-necklines. All were elegant, with their hair
piled high. They carried brightly colored bouquets of daisies,
roses and other varieties of flower. The flower girls were
adorable in their white dresses.

Summer wore an ornate champagne
short-sleeved gown of brushed satin with embroidered detailing
on the bodice, sleeves, skirt and train. Buttons graced the
back of the gown, all the way down to the end of the train.
A soft elbow-length veil covered her blonde hair, which was
piled in curls atop her head and decorated with a tiara.
When it was time for the ceremony
to begin, the groomsmen and pastor entered to the joyous sounds
of The Chieftans’ “Celtic Wedding.” The
bride and her attendants entered the church to Josh Groban’s
love song, “You’re Still You.” Friends of
the couple read two readings, a passage from 1 Corinthians,
and Shakespeare’s Sonnet XVIII, which begins, “Shall
I compare thee to a summer’s day.” It’s
obvious the couple spent a lot of time making their ceremony
personal.
The bride
was escorted by her father, who was dressed in formal military
clothing. Pastor Stan Cardwell led the ceremony, telling the
couple during his sermon that their wedding was bound to be
strong. “Your wedding has already faced a hurricane, and
you made it through all that,” he said. He told the congregation
that he had asked Summer and Jesse to memorize their wedding
vows so that they would be more than repeated words.
The celebration continued
at Olde Breton in for the reception. The couple’s forest
theme was evident in their centerpieces and decorations. Flowers
were everywhere – around the candles in the centerpieces
and atop the cake. Small fairies peeked from the centerpieces,
and autumn leaves were scattered on the tables. Small white
lights twinkled in trees around the room, and the room felt
airy and open, like you really were at a party in the forest.
On the dance floor a small white table was set up for the
children in the ceremony. It was decorated with the same burgundy
and white detailing as the larger tables.
