Send Yourself Back to School!

sept14-backtoschoolIn the last couple of weeks, you’ve gotten the kids off to school so they can begin a new year of learning. Are you going back to school this fall, too?

If you’re a small business owner, you should never stop learning, and if you feel like it’s been a while since you gained some new knowledge or skills, fall is the perfect time to start.

Ready to go back to school? Check out these online and in-person options for learning and professional development.

College of Southern Maryland

With campuses in La Plata, Leonardtown, and Prince Frederick – not to mention online courses – it’s easy to learn some new skills where you live from the College of Southern Maryland. CSM’s Community Education program includes classes online and onsite in a variety of categories, from personal finance and computers to languages, hobbies, writing, and the arts. You can even learn beer and wine appreciation!

You can even send your staff back to school through CSM’s Workforce Development program, which includes classes in business, computer software, fitness, hospitality, and more.

Lynda.com is the Internet’s go-to site for professional and personal development. You need a paid membership to the site, but once you have it, you have access to more than 2,800 video courses. The site specializes in software, creative, and business skills – perfect for small business owners like you! All classes are taught by experts, so you know you can trust the information you’re getting. You can even get a group membership plan if you want to share the learning with your employees.

For free online learning, don’t overlook YouTube. With millions of videos on more topics than you can name, there’s sure to be a video tutorial on the site that can teach you the skills you want. You won’t always get a top expert in the field, but you will get someone who’s been there before and can share what they’ve learned and caution you against the mistakes they made. Set up an account so you can bookmark the videos you live or save them to watch later.

From the useful – personal finance, for example – to the random – how to mix patterns, for example – Lifehacker.com can teach you a little bit of everything. And we mean everything. There are helpful articles and videos related to computers and technology, and lots of information for personal health, fitness, and general well-being.

Industry Events

Is your industry planning a conference or workshop series? Attend! You’ll network with others in your field and get the opportunity to talk with and learn from experts. It’s one of the best ways to stay on top of changes and new technology in your field.
