One version of the story behind Valentine’s Day recounts the story of Valentine, who performed marriages for soldiers even though the Roman Empire didn’t allow soldiers to marry. Valentine was jailed, and while in prison, fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. He wrote her a note before he was executed and signed it “from your Valentine.” Fast forward to today when the U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that almost a billion (yup — that’s billion, with a ‘b’) cards are sent at Valentine’s Day. If you’re one of those sending cards this holiday, do more than sign your name. Return to the original Valentine tradition of sending a handwritten note to express your love. In this tough economy, you might not be able to afford a gift, but it costs nothing to put into words how you feel about your significant other. And chances are pretty good he or she will treasure those words longer than any gift you could give!
