Illusions Hair & Nail Salon

404 Charles Street, La Plata, MD, United States

It’s bright and cheery inside Illusions Hair and Nail Salon in La Plata. A radio plays in the background, but you’re unlikely to hear it over the laughter and chatter of the clients and stylists in the salon. The salon is a friendly and comfortable place to be. Salon owner Lynn Kilinski said she and her staff make an effort to get to know their clients. “I have a great staff of wonderful, caring people who really listen to what the individual wants,” she said. Listening to the individual is especially important when it comes to brides. Kilinski said the stylists strive to make the bride (and her bridal party) feel beautiful and special on her wedding day. This includes doing the bride’s hair and makeup on the actual day, either in the salon or wherever the bride is. Kline said that if more than five people’s hair and makeup will be done, two stylists will work with the party that morning. She said stylists from Illusions have traveled as far north as Annapolis and all around Southern Maryland. The bride should come in to the salon three to four weeks before the wedding for a trial run, Kilinski said. She should bring her headpiece and any pictures or ideas she has of how she’d like her hair. The salon also has photographs of bridal styles it has done in the past for brides to see. “They actually see the work that we have done,”  Kilinski  said. At the trial run, the bride can work with a stylist to decide what she wants her hair to look like.  Kilinski  said it’s no problem if a bride needs more than one trial run to get the look right. Illusions’ services don’t stop with the bride’s hair. “We are a full-service salon,”  Kilinski  said. “We do anything from hair coloring to pedicures and manicures.” Kilinski  advised brides who want their nails done to do so a day or two before the wedding so they stay fresh. She said getting nails done could be a fun pre-wedding outing for the bride and her mother or attendants. Bridesmaids listen up – Illusions also sells gift certificates, which might be just the thing you were looking for to pamper the bride. Brides wanting to book Illusions’ services need to plan ahead.  Kilinski  said she began booking for this summer as early as last year. Four to six months’ notice is recommended, she said. “A few months ahead of time would be great,” she said, “so we can book that day and they know they have us.” The salon can also prepare brides for their bridal portraits, she said. Kilinski  has 20+ years experience as a stylist, and said she has worked with brides for 15 of those years. She has also done hair and makeup for models at wedding shows. They also make an effort to stay on top of trends and new products. “We stay educated,”  Kilinski said. “We attend conferences all the time.” Kilinski  said she loves making women feel beautiful for their big day and it’s easy to get caught up in the bride’s excitement. “It’s definitely something I absolutely love to do,” she said. “I’m into the romantic.”
