I hate to take all the romance out of weddings, but without a proper marriage license, you’re not legally wed, at least according to the state of Maryland. There’s no trick to getting a marriage license, and you can turn this otherwise non-romantic task into an event by making it date night.

To get your license, only one person needs to appear. You’ll need photo ID and some key information about each person (details at links below). Timing is everything: Licenses become effective at 6 a.m. the second day after application, so if you’re getting married on Saturday, you need to apply for the license by the close of business on Thursday. Licenses are valid for six months.

Fees vary. Contact the county where you’re getting married for specifics: Anne Arundel | Calvert | Charles | Prince George’s | St. Mary’s.
